Hillcrest History
The southeast DC neighborhood of Hillcrest was built by Colonel Arthur E. Randle, a prominent real estate developer of the nineteenth and early twentieth-century who also is responsible for the development of several other neighborhoods east of the Anacostia River. Moving his family into a large, Greek Revival house – later nicknamed ‘The Southeast White House’ (2909 Pennsylvania Avenue, S.E.) – in what is now known as the Randle Highlands neighborhood, Col. Randle encouraged other Washingtonians to follow his lead and build grand homes, along Pennsylvania Avenue. (Credit: Wikipedia).
Why Move to Hillcrest
Suburban Living in the City – Hillcrest is a thriving Ward 7 neighborhood of single-family homes where you will find larger than average lots relative to many other DC neighborhoods. The architectural styles include Tudor Revival, Federal Revival, Mid-Atlantic Colonial Revival, and American Craftsman bungalow. You will also find a few apartments in the neighborhood.
Affordability – Hillcrest was ranked #1 by Redfin for 2018’s “hottest neighborhoods within reach” in the nation. While no longer considered a secret, it is still one of the most affordable neighborhoods in the District.
