Family Pride Weekend Celebrating the Opening of “Rise Up” | Newseum, March 9, 10
The Newseum and Mix107.3 are coming together to host Family Pride Weekend in celebration of the opening of the Newseum’s newest exhibit, “Rise Up: Stonewall and the LGBTQ Rights Movement.” The weekend of March 9-10, visitors can take advantage of a special offer that includes two free kids tickets (18 and younger) with the purchase of one general admission adult ticket. The deal is only available March 9-10, and must be purchased at the Newseum admission desk. Museum hours.
Spring Wine Fling: Sangria Edition | Various, Through March 24
Join restaurants across metropolitan Washington as they celebrate Spring Wine Fling presented by Restaurant Association Metropolitan Washington (RAMW). The annual promotion returns as the season changes, and with hopes of warmer weather this year’s theme – the Sangria Edition – sounds even more delicious. Over 25 restaurants will offer sangria specials and inventive takes on the popular drink, allowing each restaurant to offer something unique to showcase its signature style. Guests will be able to visit participating locations at their leisure to unwind with sangria after work, meet friends for drinks, or take date night to the next level. Women in the Arts Pop up | Various, March 9-10
This International Women’s Day, DC Swim Week salutes all female artists and entrepreneurs with a celebratory, showroom-style, retail exhibit. The company has hand-selected and scheduled an abundance of remarkable female artists and designers to appear across Georgetown, and encourage attendees to enjoy four hours of art, music, shopping and cocktails alongside talented vendors. DC Independent Film Festival | Carnegie Institution for Science, Through March 10
Celebrating the 20th Anniversary as the oldest independent film festival in Washington, DC. As a competitive festival, all films are Washington DC premieres and many are U.S. and world premieres. Through screenings, seminars, workshops and discussions with the United States Congress, DCIFF gives independent filmmakers opportunities for their voices to be heard in a way that no other festival can provide. Washington National Opera: Eugene Onegin | Kennedy Center, March 9-29
Pushkin’s sweeping novel comes to vivid life in Tchaikovsky’s masterpiece. Young Tatiana confesses her devotion to the worldly Onegin, but his cold refusal devastates her. Years later, when Tatiana matures, it is Onegin who begs for her love. Will Tatiana embrace the man she once longed for? Hoops | National Building Museum, March 9 – January 4, 2020
HOOPS presents a rich and diverse selection of private and community basketball courts from around the nation and across the globe—from the deserts of Arizona to the hills of Appalachia, and from the streets of the Northeast to the playgrounds of South Africa. Bamberger has taken nearly 22,000 photographs since the series was launched in 2004, and the 75 large-format prints featured in the exhibition are the largest and first comprehensive overview of the work. All Work and No Pay: A History of Women’s Invisible Labor | National Museum of American History, March 4 – February 2020
Explore the history of women’s work in the home and the value and implications of unwaged labor. Despite making steps forward in the paid labor force, there is an implied and historical expectation that women will take care of the housework and unpaid work at home. Costumes meant for domestic work from colonial America to the 1990s and objects from various ethnic communities and classes highlight how women shared similar tasks across race and class despite the complicated dynamics and inequalities between them. Free, 10am–5:30pm.
The Cherry Blossom Pop Up Bar (PUB) | 1843 7th Street NW, Through April 21
For the third consecutive year, the Cherry Blossom PUB returns to DC to spice up spring in Shaw. The 2019 edition features a room designed like a bowl of ramen, with sculptures of noodles and chopsticks and actual ramen from Ramen by UZU served. There’s also a garden room inspired by the Palace of Versailles’ Fontaine de L’Encelade. The drink menu offers the Honeydew, Honey See (sake, vermouth, fermented sake syrup, cucumber, honeydew, absinthe) as well as the Once and Floral (gin, peach, lemon, orange flower water, egg white, matcha). The PUB will host a spring party on March 20, during which a timed $20 ticket can help you avoid the line. 5pm–12:30am, Sunday – Thursday; 5pm–1:30am, Friday – Saturday

2019 HopFest | DC Brau, March 9
HopFest 2019, the only DC beer festival by local brewers, for local brewers, is back for its 5th year in a row to support the DC Brewers’ Guild! Dozens of your favorite breweries will come together at DC Brau Brewing Company on Saturday, March 9th from 1pm to 5pm for an afternoon of hoppy beers, including old favorites, hard-to-find rare brews, and one-offs crafted just for HopFest 2019. $35-$40, 1pm-5pm
Washingtonian’s Cutest Cat Contest | Humane Rescue Alliance, Through March 14
Do you have an adorable feline friend you’re eager to show off? Submit a high-resolution photo of your cat or kitten by March 14, 2019, at 11:59 p.m., for a chance at stardom in Washingtonian. A panel of judges from Washingtonian and the contest’s beneficiary, Humane Rescue Alliance, will select our “Judges’ Pick” titleholder. In addition, a “People’s Choice” favorite will be determined by most votes received through a Washingtonian.com online gallery. Both winners will be awarded a full-page feature in Washingtonian’s May 2019 issue. All entrants will receive a faux digital Washingtonian “Cutest Cat” cover personalized with their cat’s name and image. Each submission is $30, and a portion of the proceeds will benefit the Humane Rescue Alliance.

Film and Discussion: “What Happened 2 Chocolate City?” | Smithsonian’s Anacostia Community Museum, March 10
Washington, DC was the first majority-black city in America—which garnered it the nickname “Chocolate City.” The nickname stuck, and was used by DC residents from all walks of life for many years until the city’s racial demographics changed to the point that now the nickname has fallen out of common use. Filmmaker, Mignotae Kebede’s critically acclaimed documentary, What Happened 2 Chocolate City examines how gentrification is changing Black communities as told through the lenses of three generations of Washingtonians. A panel discussion with the filmmaker and guests follows the screening. Free, 2:00pm-4:00pm.
